Mexico must improve in four areas of electromobility after the US presented a strategy to switch over to hybrid and electric vehicles.
President Joe Biden’s administration passed a bill that puts pressure on Mexico to improve its electromobility capabilities and to promote the usage of hybrid and electric vehicles.
According to the Mexican Automotive Industry Association’s (AMIA in Spanish) data, sales of EVs in Mexico in August 2021 only just exceeded 70 units. Four suggestions have been strongly provided in order to improve on its areas of opportunity.
What are those areas of opportunity?
- Both fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to attract consumers towards electromobility, with lower prices, as well as exclusive lanes and parking lots.
- Development of infrastructure, defined as an electric network powered by clean and renewable energies.
- Consumer education about how EVs reduce their carbon footprint compared to a fossil-fueled vehicle.
- Holistic legal framework: Synchronizing Mexico’s electromobility laws with larger economic blocks such as the EU or USA.
On this last point, the AMIA stated that the US congress passed bills to incentivize the purchase of EVs manufactured on American soil, affecting the Mexican automotive industry if this issue is not addressed quickly.
What does Mexico needs?
Mexico’s alternatives are to attract electromobility investments and increase the share of renewable energy supplied to its citizens.
Promoting the purchase and usage of EVs is a three-way initiative between authorities, the private sector, and consumers. AMIA is open to dialogue to put Mexico ahead of the pack in terms of electromobility.
